IELTS vs PTE vs SAT: Which Test Should You Take in 2026?

SICS Editorial · 10 Sep 2026 · 6 min read

English proficiency or aptitude? Computer-delivered or paper? Here is how to pick the right exam for your destination, course level and personal strengths.

Two Different Categories of Tests

IELTS and PTE measure English language ability. SAT measures academic aptitude for undergraduate admissions, especially in the USA. You may need one, two or even all three depending on your destination and level.

IELTS: The Global Default

  • Accepted by every major English-speaking destination
  • Two versions: Academic for university and General Training for migration
  • Widely available in India with frequent test dates
  • Speaking test is face-to-face with an examiner

PTE Academic: Fast, Computer-Based Scoring

PTE is fully computer-delivered and typically returns results within 48 hours. It is accepted by the UK, Australia and many Canadian institutions, and suits students who are comfortable with AI-scored speaking and writing tasks.

SAT: For Undergraduate Applicants to the USA

Many US universities have kept test-optional policies, but a strong SAT score can still strengthen scholarship and admission chances. It is rarely required for master's or non-US applications.

"SAT is not an English test. It tests reading, writing and math reasoning — and it is most relevant for bachelor's applicants targeting the US."
